Sinathir 0.39 - Schedule and favors

I know this is technicaly version 0.38, but calling it just 0.38 or 0.38 - full release would be needlesly confusing. Besides, I don't think I will be running out of version numbers any time soon.

Now with that out of the way, this version is the culmination of all previous beta and pre-release versions of 0.38. Continue reading if you are new or if you didn't download roughly last two released versions.

This version adds mainly two big new systems, Schedules and favors.

Schedule system

In past versions you could pick only one activity for the entire week. This new system lets you pick different activity for each day.

This is the new schedule screen. You can start scheduling your work by entering your tent or bed.

There are many new jobs and activities with multiple tiers. Some jobs pay more but are more demanding on your food stocks and mood, some are easy but reward you with only a little bit of silver.

Training has also been reworked. You can now train your skills as high as you want, but the price increases as your skills do. Each NPC has different training options.

Constructing upgrades now also works differently. Once get all the resourcess and start the construction project, you will have to schedule the actual construction. Something simple like a new farm plot will take only one day, but digging a well or building a hut will take much longer.

That's roughly it. Now. How do you get access to all these new jobs and training oportunities?

Favors

Almost all main NPCs now have a list of favors you can pick together with some lines of dialogue to go with it.

Your relationship with an NPC now equals your maximum favor points. Spending these points will give you new jobs or training types, but will also give you new items or let you use crafting stations NPCs have in their homes. There are also some favors you can ask multiple times. These are a good way to get some resourcess for free.

Most favors have three requirements. Favor cost, Relationship level and skill level. Billy wont give you new farming job if your farming skill is too low, no matter how much he likes you. He also won't give you the job if your skill is high, but your relationship level is too low. And you also need enough favor points.

These were the biggest changes. There were also some other smaller additions and bugfixes, but I will let you discover these on your own. You can also check previous blog posts, since these are  going into more detail with above additions.

What's next?

Next version will focus on introducing proper faction framework. Church will be the first to get this upgrade. You can expect things like faction ranks, faction rewards, faction benefits and so on.

The very basis of this system is already in the game. This update will just make the entire thing more transparent and slow down your progression a bit. I always found it weird how you could become the church member and advance to the next rank in a single day.

Now you will have to schedule activities and perform simple tasks to raise your "faction standing". Once it gets high enough, you will get a quest and rank up. This will get you new items, abilities and activities. Here is a little preview of the church faction:

  • Rank 1 - Initiate  - No benefits, get basic activities
  • Rank 2 - Disciple - Access to blood pebbles, more activities
  • Rank 3 - Priest - Get blood staff, gain golem follower

If you played the game before, then you know these (except for one thing) are already in the game. This means that the next update should take very little time compared to this one. Once the church faction is done, I will start working on other factions, like the Riverstone militia and cave kobolds.

And after that?

This update will come shortly after the church faction gets update. It will focus on George and Helena.

I will add a sort of XP system to them. You will be getting combat XP and activity XP. You will get combat XP by fighting alongside them and you will get activity XP by hanging out with them, talking to them or doing some activity they like (working out with George is one example).Once they get enough XP, you will be able to chose some kind of benefit for them.

For example, if level up Helena in combat, you will get a choice between new spell she will use or new weapon she will start carrying. If you level her activity XP, you might choose between new healing spell or one free healing item she will give you every week.

These levels will also affect their stat growth, so you can effectively "build" them to suit your needs. You can turn George into tank and helena into Healer, or turn George into ranged DPS dealer and helena into caster with focus on AOE. Activity levels will focus either on more utility and buffs, or steady resource generation. To make things less grindy, these levels will be time gated, so for example you will be able to level up one character only once a year. That way you won't have to keep grinding them every single week and will still be able to catch up.

This entire system is in its planning phase so there is a high chance of things changing. There are few things I'm already fully decided on (This system will only work for children NPCs), but who knows.

And next?

Who knows. I have a long list of things that still need doing. Dialogue needs to be added, graphics need to be worked on, plenty of unfinished systems that need more love, new maps, new quests, and much, much more. I have plenty of systems I want to add, but it is also important to fix and expand what is already in there.

That seems like it. As always, thank you for playing the game and reporting any bugs you encounter and for your patience. I woldn't get this far without you guys.

she's livin' the dream

i really like the balance system you developed with npcs. i don't know of many (if any?) games that do it that way, and just reading about it makes it seem so natural and obvious. it feels like slowly all the pieces are coming together. keep up the good work

Yeah. I still have an insane amount of work to do, but I'm getting there. Also, I'm patiently waiting for ToK steam release. Good luck.
